Mayoral Christmas Message 2023

As 2023 draws to a close we can take time to reflect on the year that has been and look towards the future with renewed optimism.

The last 12 months has seen an extraordinary increase in our cost-of-living expenses as inflation rose during the year, and for many an increase in interest rates which has added to the stress which families are feeling and will continue to feel for some time to come.

For many of us in agriculture and especially in livestock and wine grape production we have seen a 60% reduction in income along with both inflationary pressures and rising interest rates.

This combination makes for a toxic cocktail which can bring many to the point of utter despair, it is at times like now that we must all ensure we are looking after one another. We all live and work in a prosperous part of South Australia and I know that all agencies are working behind the scenes to keep us safe as well.

Christmas for many is a time of religious celebration for others the end of a working year, there are also those amongst us who are struggling with family relationships and life in general, let us all take this opportunity whatever your convictions to engage with the people around us and offer support in any way you are able.

During this last year many have lost loved ones, many others have had reason to celebrate by becoming Australian Citizens or even getting permanent residence.

Recently the South East has been in mourning for the family of Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig who was tragically killed while on duty protecting our community. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and colleagues who stood by his side in his time of need, and to the wider Police family who continue to work for our safety. Please thank them for the work they do for us as a gesture of our ongoing support.

I look forward to 2024 with hope and optimism - it’s what makes me get out of bed, generally not knowing what a day may bring. If you can bring a smile to someone in your day you will have achieved what it is to be human. Let’s all enjoy one another and say G’day for me!

Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year
