Naracoorte Lucindale Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed purchase of the former ANZ Bank property at 99 Smith Street for redevelopment as a central carpark for $1.6M.

An ongoing conversation between the Council and the community is the lack of parking within the Naracoorte Town Centre.

Background

  • In 2020, the Naracoorte Lucindale Council in consultation with the community developed the Naracoorte Town Centre Rejuvenation Plan. A key consideration within the Plan is creating additional carparking within the town centre.
  • In early January 2023, Council held a briefing session as an opportunity for Elected Members to review and provide future direction on the Plan.
  • In February 2023, Council resolved: Council investigates potential asset acquisition in the town centre to enable new parking opportunities and pedestrian connectivity.
  • In May 2023, Council identified the opportunity for further consultation with the town centre business sector and held a meeting for business and business owners in the town centre to discuss with Council how the Naracoorte Town Centre Rejuvenation Plan can best support town centre businesses. The general consensus at the meeting was for the Council to consider property purchases to improve parking, traffic and people movement in the Naracoorte Town Centre.
  • In August 2023, Council endorsed a revised Naracoorte Town Centre Rejuvenation Plan to reflect the feedback and direction from the town centre business sector.

Proposed purchase of 99 Smith Street

The acquisition of the former ANZ Bank property located 99 Smith Street, Naracoorte, has been suggested for consideration given its central location in the Naracoorte Town Centre.

Council now has the opportunity to purchase the property at 99 Smith Street and wishes to seek feedback from the community about the property being purchased by Council, the building being demolished, and the property being redeveloped as a carpark.

The property is located on the corner of Smith Street, Bank Place and Ormerod Street, opposite the Town Square and public toilets.

Community consultation

Community consultation on this proposal is open from 27 September and will close at 12 noon on 16 October 2023.

The primary objective of this consultation is to gain feedback from the community on Council purchasing 99 Smith Street, and if purchased, developing into carparking.

This process also provides an opportunity to:

  • Gain the community’s perspective on whether the parking shortage in Naracoorte is a perceived or actual issue; and
  • Gather community suggestions on alternate carparking solutions.
