Shape your world by stepping up as a local leader
In South Australia, you can run for Council if you meet the eligibility requirements set out in State law.
You must be an Australian citizen over 18 years old and either enrolled to vote in the Council area or be the nominee of a body corporate or group whose name appears on the voters roll for the area.
Becoming a councillor is an opportunity to contribute positively for your community. It's a rewarding and challenging role which requires commitment, responsibility and accountability.
When to nominate: You can nominate to become a candidate during the nomination period from Tuesday 26 January 2027 to 12:00pm Tuesday 9 February 2027.
The Local Government Association of South Australia and the Electoral Commission of South Australia have compiled digital resources for potential candidates.
These include free, self-paced eLearning modules for potential candidates. The 4 modules (each less than 20 minutes in duration) give potential candidates a clear overview of what councils do, what council members are responsible for, and the behaviours expected in the role, so you can decide if it's right for you and feel more prepared if you go ahead.
