Naracoorte Lucindale Council plea during National Road Safety Week: Please slow down around roadworks

Naracoorte Lucindale Council has issued a plea for motorists during National Road Safety Week to slow down around roadworks for the safety of everyone.

Council CEO Ms Kelly Westell said: “Our operators put appropriate signage in place to advise drivers of works under way, but unfortunately we're hearing stories of drivers failing to slow down.

“This poses an obvious safety risk to the drivers and to our employees and I implore people to show respect, keep safe and slow down to 25km/h when they see our machinery in operation.

“Please, just remember to slow down when work's around.”

The plea from Council comes during National Road Safety Week (11-18 May) which highlights the impact of road trauma and the ways we can help to make our roads safer for everyone.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and Government.

At the start of National Road Safety Week on Sunday 11 May, South Australia Police Traffic Services Branch Officer in Charge Superintendent Shane Johnson said: “Today, and every day, South Australia Police does our part in making roads across Australia safe - and we urge all road users to do the same.

“Throughout National Road Safety Week, police will conduct Operation Danger, which targets easily avoidable offences and if drivers obey them, they’re less likely to cause a crash.

“Road users should simply make safe road choices and drive to survive. Give each other space between vehicles, check your blind spots and slow down as you approach intersections.”
