Australia Day, 26 January 2022

Naracoorte Lucindale Council’s 2022 Australia Day celebrations at Naracoorte and Lucindale will be modified to reduce risk to the community due to a surge in local COVID cases.

In Naracoorte, the public breakfast has been cancelled, and the modified ceremony will get underway in the Town Square at 8.30am with the presentation of Australia Day awards and a citizenship ceremony.

Lucindale’s presentation of Australia Day awards will still be held at the Rotunda in Centenary Park at 11am, but the community lunch normally held after the ceremony has been cancelled.

For the first time, both the Naracoorte and Lucindale Australia Day celebrations will be live streamed to Council’s Facebook page @naracoortelucindalecouncil to enable people from near and far to tune in from the comfort of their own homes.

Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor Erika Vickery OAM said the local celebrations had been “reimagined” so that locals could still celebrate what unites Australians and the spirit and diversity of our country on Australia Day.

“The safety of our community during these uncertain times is at the forefront of our minds in making this decision.

“We’re encouraging everyone to reflect, respect and celebrate in a safe and meaningful way to them.”

As both the Naracoorte and Lucindale celebrations are held outdoors, they are still open to all members of the public who wish to attend. COVID-Safe Plans are in place for both the Town Square and Centenary Park and people are urged to stay home if they feel unwell.
