triple j’s One Night Stand is heading to Lucindale on 14 September 2019.  The One Night Stand is radio station triple j's annual, free, all ages, drug-and-alcohol-free concert.  It’s a massive free party featuring the best Aussie acts.

This year’s acts are Hilltop Hoods, Meg Mac, Ocean Alley, G Flip and Chelsea Manor (triple j Unearthed winners) with special guests A.B. Original, Didirri, Ecca Vandal, Illy, Jesswar, Kram, Montaigne, Nyassa and Timberwolf!

Lucindale is one of the smallest towns triple j have thrown a concert and it’s the first time in eight years the concert series has been back to South Australia – last time was Tumby Bay in 2011.

On the importance of hosting the 2019 One Night Stand, Naracoorte Lucindale Council, Mayor Erika Vickery OAM says “We are very excited to have been selected to host the triple j One Night Stand featuring some of Australia’s best acts. We’re looking forward to showing off Lucindale to the 25,000 expected to attend the concert and the rest of Australia via the live broadcasts.  This is an opportunity for our young people to experience a fantastic event which provides a platform to highlight the youth in our community.  This event will show that small communities, such as Lucindale, can do incredible things.”

Lucindale ran a very long campaign to host the One Night Stand.  The grassroots campaign began with a Lucindale ONS Facebook page in 2012 and in the seven years since, it’s built up from 6,000 likes at the time of announcement to 11,000 now, which accounts for everybody in town, as well as the neighbouring towns and further afield.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council came on board in February 2018, supporting Lucindale’s 2018 expression of interest.  Lucindale missed out on the 2018 event, but in the middle of May 2019, triple j advised Council that Lucindale was shortlisted for 2019.  A visit to Lucindale by triple j followed later in May.  Working with the Lucindale community Council provided triple j with further information selling the benefits of holding the One Night Stand in Lucindale.

Around a month later on 14 June, triple j’s Manager, Lachlan Macara, advised Council that Lucindale’s bid for the 2019 One Night Stand was successful.  Since the public announcement on 27 June the Naracoorte Lucindale Council and the Lucindale community have been fully focused on delivering the event of a lifetime in Lucindale.

Naracoorte Lucindale Council, the event coordinator, entered into a partnership arrangement with triple j and has supported and funded the broader concert costs within the Lucindale Oval concert venue.

Council is planning for up to 25,000 people to attend the concert and has organised the following for the Lucindale Oval:

  • 160 toilets
  • 7 generators to power the concert and food stalls, requiring 5,100 litres of fuel to run
  • 500m of security fencing
  • 32 drinking taps - so bring your empty, reusable plastic bottle with you. You can also bring your own water, but only factory-sealed water bottles allowed.
  • 9 light towers
  • 24 food stalls offering a mix of cuisines and veggie and vegan options
  • Rubbish bins

Most goods and services are being supplied by businesses located in the Limestone Coast.

Of course when you’re holding one of the biggest parties ever there are many jobs in the lead up.  Council has been working on:

  • keeping everyone safe
    • declaring Lucindale and Yakka Park an alcohol free zone from 12.00pm (noon) Friday 13 September 2019 until 12.00pm (noon) Sunday 15 September 2019
    • working with licensed premises on liquor licensing
    • traffic management - car parking is free at Yakka Park – please park here and not around the town!  From Lucindale, access it via Musgrave Ave, then Avenue Range Rd.  For Disabled parking, head right once you turn off Avenue Range Rd and head towards West Terrace.  Passenger drop off and pick up is via Centenary Ave.  Bus parking will be along Park Drive, Gum Ave and at the “Old Sale Yards”, corner Railway Terrace and Bowling Club Rd.
    • emergency response plan with emergency services
    • providing a bus service between Naracoorte and Lucindale and collating information for other towns to provide bus services
  • ensuring the Lucindale Oval and surrounding area is safe for everyone, sections of the oval fence have been removed so everyone can easily move around, cleaning up fallen trees and low branches (some of this was from storm damage early in August)
  • waste management
  • ensuring planes are booked in for the Lucindale airstrip – if you are flying in please make sure you notify Council in advance on 8760 1100
  • liaising with the community, keeping everyone informed of what’s happening and supporting the activities to entertain and welcome people to Lucindale
  • liaising and providing local knowledge to triple j
  • ensuring there is sufficient mobile phone data coverage

“The One Night Stand is a massive Council and community effort and many community groups and individuals are making a significant contribution to ensure the event is a success” Mayor Erika Vickery OAM said.

The Lucindale Lions Club with support from many community members have established a tent city and camp site at Yakka Park.  The Lucindale Football Club is providing the Oval for the concert.  Both the Football and Netball Clubs are providing the use of their clubrooms and other buildings to triple j, which will be used for the broadcast centre, emergency operations office, catering for triple j and ABC staff and space for the artists.  LINC has coordinated activities to welcome people to Lucindale including art installations, produce market and a pop up grocery shop offering a range of groceries, drinks, snacks, toiletries and other essentials.

The One Night Stand has generated significant economic benefit for the Limestone Coast, with accommodation mostly booked out in Naracoorte, Lucindale, Kingston and Robe.  There will be a major influx of people into the Limestone Coast in the lead up to the event, with anticipated concert attendance of up to 25,000 people, local businesses are likely to experience an increase in customers, particularly businesses providing food and drinks.  With an expected average spend of $250 per person per day and many people arriving in the Limestone Coast on Thursday, we expect a total visitor spend of up to $15 million across the four days.
