During October, the Naracoorte Lucindale Council will commence reconstruction of a section of Old Caves Road in Naracoorte from Caves Road to 3.8km north towards Naracoorte.
This is stage 1 of a 3 stage project.
To ensure the safety of workers and road users, and the completion of works in the shortest time, there will be times that the section of Old Caves Road where works are occurring will be closed.
The Naracoorte Lucindale Council secured a $618,000 grant from the Special Local Roads Program, supplementing the Stage 1 project cost of $1.27 million. The Special Local Roads Program is a partnership between the South Australian, Commonwealth and Local Governments.
Old Caves Road starts at Arthur Street in Naracoorte and finishes at the intersection with Caves Road. Some sections of the road are narrow, the road pavement and surface are severely deteriorated and the road is not suited for tourism traffic.
The Old Caves Road is an important link from Naracoorte to the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves. The Naracoorte Caves Connection Concept Statement highlights the importance of the Naracoorte Caves and the Naracoorte Town being well connected. Once all three stages have been reconstructed, Old Caves Road will be the major road link between Naracoorte and the Naracoorte Caves and will be suitable for tourism traffic such as caravans and recreational vehicles (RVs).
Stages 2 and 3 are scheduled for construction in 2019/2020 and 2020/21, respectively, subject to funding. Stage 2 will involve a complete re-construction of a 1km section from the Arthur Street intersection to Price Avenue. Stage 2 construction will commence 300m south of Pistol Club Road and finish 1.6km south of Pistol Club Road.
To enhance the connection between the Naracoorte Caves and Naracoorte a walking and bike trail will be developed along and adjacent to Old Caves Road such as Haynes Edwards Road to Michaels Road. The bike and walking trail is a separate project that is being developed and its progress is subject to receiving grant funding. The trail will highlight geologic and natural features related to the Naracoorte Caves and include interpretative signs.
The reconstruction of these sections of Old Caves Road will complement the section reconstructed between Pinkerton Road and Pistol Club Road in 2014.
