What’s more Australian than a picnic on Australia Day?  Bring your picnic blanket, chairs and table to this year’s Australia Day celebrations.

Celebrations at Lucindale commence at 11.00am at Centenary Park, Musgrave Avenue.   This is followed by a community lunch, supplied by community groups.

Thanks to Council’s support lunch is complimentary.

The ceremony commences with the flag raising ceremony, followed by an Australia Day address by Dr Liz Reed.  Dr Reed is a vertebrate palaeontologist specialising in aged cave deposits, particularly in the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves.  Dr Reed has an interesting story to share about her journey to becoming a palaeontologist and her ‘love at first cave’ when she first visited the Naracoorte Caves.  Dr Reed leads a palaeontology research group at the University of Adelaide and is training the next generation of palaeontologists to study the remarkable Naracoorte Caves.

The ceremony concludes with the presentation of the Australia Day Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year awards.

The Citizen of the Year awards reward and recognise individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during 2018, and / or given outstanding service over a number of years, to a local community over and above normal employment duties.

The Australia Day Citizen of the Year awards being presented at Lucindale are:

  • Lucindale Citizen of the Year – Lynette Loechel
  • Event of the Year – 40th Anniversary of the South East Field Days – Lucindale Lions Club
  • Lucindale Certificate of Appreciation – Stephanie Brooker-Jones and David Brooker

Australia Day celebrations are an opportunity for the community to come together, acknowledge the contribution people have made to the community and welcome new citizens to the community.  Australia Day events are held on 26 January.
